Orinox attended the AVEVA World North America User Meeting (NAUM 2017), a two-days meeting with 200 attendants, including 50 attedants from Aveva saw very strong presentations in the north America user meeting ever.

During the first quarter of 2017 Orinox attended the AVEVA World North America User Meeting (NAUM) a two-dayconference where 200 attendants, including 50 attendants from Aveva, saw very positive and well designed presentations.

The theme of quality was omnipresent in the conference with many great speakers looking at themes from different viewpoints and sides. Aveva’s EVP for the Americas, Amish Sabharwal set the scene by summing up what is at stake by making a digital asset the basis for projects and asset operations:
Southern Company’s Tim DeWitt – Design Technology Lead
Tim DeWitt showed us Southern Company’s journey into the digital world. According to the National Institute of Information Technology, engineers will spend 40-60% of their time looking for information.Based on this statistic, Southern showedconcerns that the document centric way of working delivered under-average quality information to construction and operations and felt that the engineering was inefficient compared to a process based on digital assets.
Eastman Kodak’s David Thompson – Senior Engineering Associate
Eastman Kodak spoke about the similar concerns that Southern felt. David Thompson believes that a data centric company should not be a company that copys and paste or drags and drops but a data entry point that focuses on entering thedata only once.
Eastman is on a journey from document centric to data-centric by using the Aveva tools via remote desktop app and a VPN connection they are creating a seemless avenue to collect and store their data without the upload of multiple documents and versions. One cool feature of this journey allows for iPad usage, which helps field engineers on the go and even tolerates being disconnected for 30-60 minutes. Eastman uses the versioning feature for templates.
Eastman recognizes that for the company they need to focus less on the technical issue but more on a push to internally sell the internal changes in business practices within their company. One way they are doing this is using the ADKAR method or:
McDermott’s Jeff Stroh – Senior Manager, Engineering
Jeff discussed how research has shown that 70% of Aveva clients only use PDMS/E3D. McDermott want to use all the Aveva tools and use data consistency checks to reduce waste (like buying the wrong components or buying a large surplus of bulk materials).
Chevron’s Bob Watson – Manager Engineering Information Systems
Bob Watson made quality information handover his theme, and spoke about the Capital Facilities Information Handover Specification or CFIHOSto which helps facilitatea better communication in the supply chain. Chevron has set out to standardize the way information about plant objects is being handed over between OO, EPC and equipment/component suppliers. Up until this point there has been too much free format and thereforeinformation must be typed in back and forth within the supply chain network for every change in data. Chevron has choosen AVEVA net to solve this problem they are experiencing within their supply chain departments.
Jacobs Engineering’s Marc Henri Cerar – Project information Manager
Mark Cerar spoke to the listeners about Jacobs plans to move 700 of their users from their own in house engineering software which is an engineering database producing the line list and indexes for electrical equipment and instruments to Aveva Engineering.They are currently using AvevaNet to bring a small number of attributes together from different sources (SmartPlant and Aveva and their own EDB) to do quality checking and reporting.
ExxonMobilChemicals Mark Bennet – Responsible for E3D and VR at Exxon
For the last two years Mark has been working together with Aveva on building a pre-feed 3D application.The team uses parametric models to create a layout of the main equipment, foundation and structural steel. The system uses E3D’s auto router for the biggest bore pipes and then makes several alternative arrangements. The next step includes producing MTO’s and then giving the data to estimating. The deliverables from the model are plot plans with foundations, structural, piping and equipment. Orinox is curious to see how Mark and his team are going to make the connection to the FEED and detailed stages and keep the data digital.Being responsible for this early phase of a projects, Mark is looking for the usage of AVP for promotional films. He wants to combine 3D terrain scan with 3D models. Orinox is looking for opportunities to see if we can help develop such combined models for Exxon.
VISTA Project’s Patrick Reilly – Managing partner
Patrick Reillyspoke about the same theme ExxonMobil is facing and gave a very clear presentation on the advantages of throwing away AutoCAD and Excel in pre-feed and taking the additional effort to start the digital asset in 3D sooner than later. With this progressive vision, Vista seems to be enable to compete with Amec for SAGD projects (Steam augmented Gravity Drain based oil extraction from horizontal drills).The advantage of using Aveva in a datacentric pre-feed means that Vista can create line lists from P&ID’s,indexes from PIDS, do a P&ID to 3D validation, and allow E3D to automatically deliver the Plot plan to 3D for validation. In this early phase AVEVA .net, provides an advantage that allows the engineers to find the data they are looking for quickly and efficiently. He estimates that sharing the platform between the project partners and transitioning the data to FEED will save 15% in feed.
